The Brief

Adullam Studios had a quiet short film about a young man waiting for someone to come home. Quiet films are hard to sell, so the film and its trailer had to make the ache in the title felt from the first frame.

The Idea

Stay with one man through ordinary places and let the space around him do the talking. He is always looking somewhere else, out of a window or down an aisle, and the person he is waiting for reaches him as a message on his phone: 'I'm coming HOME'.

How We Made It

We worked in real places with the light that was already there: a pale wall and window in his room, the long bright shelves of a supermarket, a café table against the glass, the waterfront at dusk. He is framed off-centre with room to look into, or from behind, so we see what he sees. The text message is built as an on-screen phone notification, so the story's other half arrives as type.

The Result

Longing — short film
Longing — aisle
Longing — glass
